Shoe sizing guide for kids

How do children's feet grow?

The first three years, their size will change every 4 to 6 months.

During the first 15 months their feet will grow 3 millimetres every 2 months approximately; from 15 months until 2 years of age, 2 millimetres every three months; and from two to three years; 3 millimetres every three or four months.

The growth of baby and children’s feet is fast but not constant.

It’s important to check if their shoes indeed fit and leave enough room to move..

Tips to get the right footwear

At home always barefooted!

Your baby needs to lose the plantar grasp reflex to be able to walk correctly. This usually passes automatically through tactile stimulation when a baby plays with his feet or puts his foot on the floor. The more stimulus the plant receives during playing, the faster the reflection disappears.

For children that already walk, it is also very healthy to walk around barefooted; the feet adopt positions which help to strengthen the musculature of the feet and ankles.

Choose natural materials

It is advisable to buy footwear fabricated with natural materials that allow your child’s feet to breathe like for example leather.

Do not save on footwear

If you want to save money do not do it by buying cheap shoes. Most shoes that are economically prized are made of sintetic materials. Take into account the price but even more the quality when buying shoes for your child.

In a nutshell

Let your child play and walk around wearing socks or barefooted. Choose a shoe made from natural materials with a non-skid but flexible sole and check your child’s feet size regularly.

Choosing the right size

The best moment to measure is at the end of the day , when your child’s feet are more swollen.

You have to measure them wearing socks.

It is recomendable to let your child stand on a piece of paper with their back against a wall, so that their weight is distributed evenly on both feet. Then you can mark the beginning and the end of the foot with a pencil, starting with the largest toe.

You have to take into account that, when walking, the foot stretches when it touches the floor. For this reason the shoe needs to be a little bit bigger. Add 1 centimetre to the length you have obtained when measuring your child’s foot.

Example: 15cm + 1cm = 16 cm. In this case you should buy a size 26.
